Software subscription cost calculator

Add what your business pays for and see what it comes to in a year. No email, no sign-up, and the list stays in your browser unless you decide to send it.

Your subscriptions

How it adds up

The arithmetic, so you can check it.

A monthly charge is multiplied by twelve, a quarterly one by four, and an annual one is left alone. A per-user price is multiplied by the number of users once, before that. The monthly figure is the yearly total divided by twelve, which is why it says “about”. One-time costs are shown on their own line and never mixed into the recurring total.

The payback month is the first month in which the subscriptions you marked would have cost as much as building and running a replacement. If that month does not arrive within ten years, the calculator says there is no calculated payback, because there isn't one.

Questions

Before you trust a calculator on a developer's website.

Where do my numbers go?
Nowhere. The arithmetic runs in your browser and the list is never sent to this site or anyone else. If you tick the box to remember it, it is saved on this device only, and the Clear button removes it. It reaches me only if you press the button that says it will, and you see the message before it is sent.
Does this include tax and discounts?
It uses exactly what you type. If your card is charged tax on top, type the charged amount. An annual plan's discount is already in its annual price, so enter it as annual rather than converting it to monthly yourself.
Will building my own software be cheaper?
Sometimes, and often not. The comparison only uses numbers you enter, over the same number of years on both sides, and it says so plainly when there is no payback. Accounting, payment processing, payroll and anything with a compliance burden are usually better rented from a company whose whole job is keeping them correct.
What is the difference between this and the free subscription audit?
This is arithmetic you do yourself in a minute. The audit is me reading your list and writing back with what each tool does, what you would lose by dropping it, and the one thing I would build first. I reply within 24 hours.
